“It’s time for engagement photos… but what do we wear???”
First, don’t panic! You do not need to become completely different people for your engagement session.
The best outfits are usually the ones that still feel like you—just maybe a slightly elevated version. My biggest goal is that you feel comfortable, confident, and able to actually interact naturally with each other instead of worrying about your clothes the whole time.
These are not hard rules. More like gentle guidelines. So here are my best engagement session outfit tips and engagement photo outfit ideas from someone who spends a lot of time looking at people in photos. 🙂
1. Wear something you can actually exist in
This is the biggest one.
If you can’t comfortably walk, sit, move around, hug each other, breathe deeply, or raise your arms above shoulder height… it may not be the one.
A huge part of my approach is capturing movement and interaction naturally, so outfits that let you relax and be yourselves almost always photograph best.
Also: I strongly recommend not wearing something for the very first time at your session. Sometimes clothes have secrets.
2. Dress for the same world
Coordinate, don’t clone yourselves. One of the easiest ways to make engagement session outfits feel cohesive is choosing looks that feel like they belong together without matching exactly.
Think complementary colors, similar levels of dressiness, and outfits that make sense together. If one of you looks ready for a candlelit dinner and the other looks prepared to climb a mountain… we may need to regroup a little.
3. Texture photographs beautifully
Knits, linen, denim, suede, cotton, flowy fabrics, layered pieces—textures add depth and movement to photos in a really beautiful way.
Especially outdoors, movement in clothing can make images feel more alive and cinematic!
4. Neutrals are usually a safe bet (but personality is welcome)
Cream, tan, brown, muted greens, black, denim, soft blues, earthy tones, etc. tend to photograph really nicely and timelessly.
That said, this does not mean you need to dress like a sad beige influencer.
If bold colors, funky jewelry, cool shoes, vintage pieces, or a leather jacket feel more like you, I would much rather lean into your actual personality than force you into something generic.
One small caution: neon tones can sometimes reflect strange color casts onto skin in photos, so that’s the only thing I’d really recommend to avoid.
5. Patterns are great… in moderation
Simple patterns can work really well. Tiny florals, subtle stripes, texture-based patterns, etc. can add interest without overwhelming the image.
Usually it works best if patterns are balanced with solids or simpler textures, both in your individual outfits and as a couple.
6. Please free yourselves from pocket clutter
Phones, wallets, keys, sunglasses, rogue receipts from months ago… somehow they always become visible in photos.
If possible, try to keep pockets fairly empty during the session unless you specifically want the outline of a car key permanently memorialized in your engagement gallery. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you!
7. A few things I generally recommend avoiding
- Large logos or graphic text
- Neon colors
- Super wrinkled clothing
- Clothes that feel overly restrictive
- Apple watches/fitness watches (totally your call, but people often prefer the photos without them afterward)
- Sunglasses for most of the session (I want to see your eyes!)
8. Bring options if you want to
If you’re the multiple-outfit type, feel free to bring a second look! I bring a changing tent along to make swaps easy.
I’ve had couples bring:
- a more casual outfit
- a dressier outfit
- a “very us” outfit
- an outfit that feels a little more editorial/fun
There’s no right answer.
9. Most of all: don’t overthink it
The best engagement session outfits are the ones that feel like you. Truly. Your engagement photos are not going to be meaningful because you perfectly followed every outfit “rule” on the internet.
Some couples show up in dresses and boots. Some wear vintage jackets and Doc Martens. Whether your style leans casual, editorial, vintage, trendy, outdoorsy, colorful, minimalist, or somewhere in between, the best engagement session outfits are the ones that feel honest to who you are.
