Why location matters
When you’re planning your engagement session, choosing a location is one of the first (and most fun) decisions to make. Whether you’re imagining golden-hour light in a quiet field, urban backdrops with a drink in hand, or something totally personal to you–there’s a place that will feel just right.
As an engagement photographer based in Minneapolis, I’ve had the chance to photograph couples all over the metro area and across the state. Here are five of my favorite types of locations–some specific, some more flexible–that always deliver photos full of connection.
1. Moir Park, Bloomington
Nestled along Nine Mile Creek, Moir Park feels like a little hidden gem. It has everything: wooded trails, flowing water, charming bridges, and open grassy areas perfect for walking, twirling, or simply sitting together. The light here is beautiful year-round, but fall is especially magical.
Why I love it: Tons of variety in one spot, easy to explore (often without crowds, making it a great and quiet space to connect), and just enough nature to feel tucked away from the world while still being 10-15 minutes from the cities.
2. Rice Park, St. Paul
Right in the heart of downtown St. Paul, Rice Park brings a cozy, historic vibe with classic architecture, string lights, and elegant city charm. With the Landmark Center and St. Paul Hotel as your backdrop, this spot feels timeless and elevated–especially in the fall and winter when the lights are up.
Why I love it: It offers a romantic, urban atmosphere. It’s perfect for couples who want something iconic and a little magical.
3. Lyndale Park Rose Garden, Minneapolis
Soft, romantic, and full of charm–this garden is beautiful in the spring and summer when the roses and surrounding blooms are in full display. It has a classic feel but still allows for movement, candids, and quiet moments. Plus, you’re within walking distance to Lake Harriet Bandshell Park if you wanted more variety.
Why I love it: It photographs beautifully in soft light, and gives a timeless feel to any session without needing to be overly formal.
4. The North Loop, Minneapolis
If you’re drawn to clean lines, brick walls, and modern city feel, the North Loop always delivers. We can explore alleyways, stop at your favorite bar or coffee shop, and get that modern documentary vibe you’d expect from an engagement session downtown.
Why I love it: It’s full of texture, energy, and variety. Each street corner has its own charm, making it easy to move around for photos that feel dynamic and unique.
Bonus: Though technically in Northeast, St. Anthony Main is another great location nearby (right on the Mississippi River) with stunning views of downtown.

5. Your own favorite spot
Some of the most meaningful photos happen somewhere personal–your neighborhood bar, your home, where you had your first date, the trail where you walk your dog every night. These locations may not be on every top 10 list, but they’re perfect if they matter to you.
Why I love it: Comfort = confidence.
Another location: Square Lake Park, Stillwater
This park is a dream for couples who want something more rustic and quiet. Towering pine trees, winding trails, and a stunning west-facing beach make it ideal for peaceful moments and golden-hour magic. It’s more of a drive, but so worth it.
Extra bonus: Stop at Nelson’s Ice Cream in Stillwater for heaping scoops of old-fashioned treats to finish out your session. The cutest spot and most delicious ice cream with over 40 flavors!
Why I love it: The scenery feels cinematic but is still lowkey and great for authentic, relaxed storytelling. And the west-facing beach makes for the most stunning sunsets on the water!

How to choose the right one
If you don’t already have a place in mind, that’s totally normal. I help all my couples figure out a location that makes sense for them and their preferences. We’ll talk about the vibe, the season, the light, and more. And if you want to blend a few ideas (like nature + city), we can absolutely do that.
Have some ideas in mind but you’re stuck between them? I’m always happy to give insight on the pros and cons of each, and share galleries so you can see what your photos could actually look like.
